What is RTP?

What is RTP?

What does RTP mean?

RTP is a coefficient that shows how much you might get back from your bets on a game. It’s used in slots and table games and appears as a percentage. For example, the average RTP for slots is 96%, meaning that if you bet 100 RON, you would theoretically receive 96 RON back.

It’s essential to remember, however, that RTP is a theoretical coefficient calculated over millions of spins. In reality, a single gaming session might have only 100 spins, which is too small a sample to accurately reflect the RTP, as it would be imprecise. Casino game payouts are inconsistent and random.

To understand what RTP means, you should also know that every game in licensed online casinos has an RNG (Random Number Generator). This software generates random sequences of numbers or symbols, ensuring that the RTP coefficient cannot be manipulated, and that results are always random.

As noted above, the RTP coefficient indicates that, theoretically, the game will pay you back less than what you wagered. This is how casino games function since the house always has an advantage. Over the long term, the house consistently comes out ahead.

The casino edge is also a coefficient that you find when you subtract the RTP from the total. Thus, the average house edge in pawns is 4%, i.e. 100% - 96%. In other words, the casino is chosen with a net profit of 4 RON for every 100 RON bet.

What isn’t RTP?

Now that we’ve seen what RTP is, let’s look at what it isn’t. As mentioned above, it’s a theoretical coefficient and shouldn’t be taken literally when you play. So, it doesn’t tell you your chances of winning. For instance, if a game’s RTP is 96% and you bet 100 RON over 100 rounds, you won’t get exactly 96 RON back.

The Return to Player rate should not be confused with probability or payout odds. For example, in European roulette, the probability that your bet on black will win is 48.65%, and the payout odds are 1:1, meaning your bet is doubled. Together, probability and payout odds can also indicate the RTP. Doubling the probability percentage gives you the RTP for European roulette, which is 97.3%.

The coefficient serves as an indication of how well a game pays out over the long run. This is why it’s preferable to play games with a high RTP. Only over a large number of rounds will the difference become noticeable. However, a high RTP coefficient doesn’t guarantee big wins. Payouts vary widely, especially with slots, but we’ll discuss that more in the next section.

Slot RTP vs. Volatility

Variance, or volatility, shows how frequently a slot game pays out. The lower the volatility, the more often the game pays out, and vice versa. However, frequent payouts also mean smaller winnings, while less frequent payouts are typically larger.

Regardless of volatility, the RTP coefficient is unaffected because it’s calculated over millions of rounds. However, in a single gaming session, RTP can vary greatly, from 30% to over 300%. This is why some players win on slots, but overall, in the long term, the casino retains the house edge.

Some casinos categorize games with live RTP, where you can see “hot” or “cold” games. We recommend avoiding these sections as they don’t really indicate anything. The RNG ensures that results are not only random but also independent of previous outcomes. Those games with high real-time RTP can just as easily pay out nothing.

How to find a casino game’s RTP coefficient?

Now that you know what RTP means, where can you find it? Some casinos list these coefficients on their site, but most often, they are located in the game’s paytable and/or information section.

The most reliable way to find this coefficient is on Betwave. We provide game reviews where we mention the RTP along with other features like volatility, pay lines, and special features. Before playing with real money, you should check this coefficient and try the demo version to familiarize yourself with the slot.

Games with high RTP

We also recommend playing only high RTP games, as they offer better advantages for you in the long run. Below are some examples of slots with a high payout rate:

  • Big Bass Splash by Pragmatic Play with an RTP of 96.71%
  • Sweet Bonanza by Pragmatic Play with an RTP of 96.49%
  • Shining Crown by Amusnet with an RTP of 96.37%
  • Zodiac Wheel by Amusnet with an RTP of 96.45%
  • Money Train 2 by Relax Gaming with an RTP of 96.4%
  • Tome of Madness by Play’n Go with an RTP of 96.59%
  • Super Lion Megaways by Skywind with an RTP of 96.5%
